Details
Professor James G. Fujimoto, inventor of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technology, will deliver the third Spectacle Makers' Lecture on Monday 25 November 2024 at 1 Wimpole Street (RSM), from 6 to 8pm.
OCT technology has revolutionised ophthalmic diagnosis with a non-invasive scan of the retina carried out in a matter of seconds. The OCT scan has transformed eye care and treatment in hospitals and optometric practice, and is providing an ever-expanding wealth of data that has been instrumental in the development of AI diagnostics.
Optical Coherence Tomography and the OCT scan is an incredible example of biomedical technology moving from theoretical research to becoming an intrinsic part of everyday clinical practice. Led by Professor Fujimoto and his team, it was the collaborative result of engineering, clinical medicine, business and investment. Further advancements to OCT are being made all the time by an international community dedicated to pushing this technology to its absolute potential. In his lecture, Professor Fujimoto will explore the development of OCT, how this technology came to be standard procedure in ophthalmic diagnostics, the impact it has had in ophthalmology and what its future in clinical practice and beyond might look like.
Whether you are curious to know more about its accelerated impact on eye health professionals and patient care, its application in ophthalmology and other health fields, or its future in diagnostics, you will have the chance to direct your questions to a leading authority on the advancement of OCT technology. Professor Fujimoto is currently involved in researching biomedical imaging, OCT, advanced laser technologies and their applications in ophthalmology, endoscopy, cancer detection, surgical guidance and developmental biology. He is the Elihu Thomson Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT, Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor at the Medical University of Vienna.
The doors will open at 6pm. The lecture will begin promptly at 6.15 and conclude with a Q&A session. From 7.30 guests are invited to stay for a drinks and canapes reception.
